I love Coca Cola. The only time I remember drinking Pepsi was at my Grandma Sweeney’s house. That’s the only kind of soda I recall her having and she NEVER said no, and a sugar fiend’s gotta get her fix!
Starting in high school, I would drink Diet Coke constantly. This is not a overstatement. I had a Diet Coke in my hand at all times. The back seat of my car was FULL of Diet Coke cans. I was a junkie. For 20 years, I drank a minimum of 60 ounces of DC a day. A MINIMUM. A low estimate would put me at consuming 438,000 ounces of Diet Coke, approximately 3,422 gallons of the stuff over 20 years. I always teased that if NutraSweet made you grow a third eye, I would be the first one to get it. It was the bottom of the food pyramid to this girl. Weirdly enough at the tender age of my mid-thirties, I was waking up in the morning and couldn’t move my arm or my eye wouldn’t open or I couldn’t feel my foot. It was off the wall. I got tested for a lot of big stuff like MS and Parkinson’s, the whole work up. I didn’t have a trace of any of it. But of course, I walked into the doctor’s office holding a can of the good stuff. On a whim, the doc points to the can and says “you drink a lot of that?” I was told to quit drinking it immediately, do not pass go, do not collect $200. My last Diet Coke was behind me. It was the worst week of my life. The WORST.I choked down a regular Coke to make the massive headaches bearable. I was sick. I was beyond sick. Saying I was sick to my stomach is like saying childbirth tickled. Vast. Understatement. I was going through total withdrawal. It was a pain I wish on nobody. I am now unable to consume anything with aspartame or the cycle begins again. I now need to omit diet sodas or juices, fat free anything like yogurt, puddings, desserts, jellies, gum, drink mixes, all the good stuff. I can’t have it.
With that being said, I sometimes want a Coke. I love real Coke, but it throws off my macros for the whole day. My knight in shining armor showed up in a green can. Green Coke, otherwise known as Coke Life is Coca Cola’s best kept secret. Coca-Cola Life is a reduced-calorie cola sweetened with a blend of sugar and stevia leaf extract. It contains 35% fewer calories per fluid ounce compared to other leading colas. It is made with carbonated water, cane sugar, caramel color, natural flavors, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate, (to protect taste), caffeine and stevia leaf extract. And guess what? One can is 90 calories. That’s it! It doesn’t screw my day and I get my fix. Granted, I don’t do this EVERY day. I have had a six pack in the fridge for two weeks and there are three left.
Coca Cola, thank you for your commitment to my sanity. I owe you one. You can find 6 packs at Target and most grocery stores. Enjoy!
